Packers are holding kills even with last year in an effort to boost sagging beef prices. The latest USDA survey shows that there are at least enough cattle on feed to sustain this level of kill. In fact, if packers don't pick up the pace a little by mid-March, market-ready cattle could start to back up. Most boxed beef items are available at steady prices. Ground beef prices are backing off from their January highs, a normal trend for this time of the year.

This is the second week that packers have reduced kills by roughly 6% -- bringing cattle slaughter back in line with feedlot supply. Last weeks beef production was very close to where is was in 2016, but overall beef prices were 15% lower. If packers can keep production throttled back to where it was last year, it would be fair to assume that beef prices can begin to recover. So far the only prices which have firmed are for some of the thin meats like flanks and skirts.

There was some plant downtime early this week in the wake of widespread ice storms/power outages throughout the country's midsection. You wouldn't know that supply had been interrupted, however, by looking at beef prices. The market has been flat with most items readily available. Packers are losing money, so we will continue to see plant downtime until beef prices firm.

Cattle supplies are getting tighter, the result of smaller placements last year. Packers have been forced to pay more for cattle, bidding prices up to $1.20/lb vs $1.00 last October. Meanwhile, post holiday beef demand is slow with the prices of most cuts trending lower. Packer margins are now under pressure, pushed to near breakeven by the combination of higher cattle cost and lower beef prices. Look for packers to reduce production to support beef prices.

Ground beef prices have bounced 30% higher in the last few weeks and continue to be supported by holiday-reduced production schedules. Rounds and chucks are in great shape, with asking prices trending higher. Strip features have cleaned up inventory, with higher asking prices being the rule. Tenders and ribeyes continue to adjust lower.
