Decoding Dining with Dementia and International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI) Update

Eating independently is a challenge for residents with dementia because motor skills, vision and communication can be impaired. We will investigate solutions to promote independent dining, including meals that can easily be implemented on your menu. Plus, our guest speaker, John Holahan, will explain the International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI), covering textured modified foods and patient safety as it relates to meal strategy for individuals with dementia. 

Objectives:

  • State at least two ways that dementia impacts the ability to feed one's self.
  • Promote independence and dignity in feeding with the finger foods diet.
  • Name three ways to increase pureed food appeal for your patients / residents.

Food for Thought: The MIND Diet

By the year 2050, it is estimated that 131.5 million people will have dementia worldwide—almost three times the number of people with dementia today. Research has shown that nutrition can play a significant role in preventing cognitive decline. Learn about the MIND diet and how the components of the diet contribute to prevention.

  • Define dementia and understand the rising prevalence
  • Understand how nutrition can play a role in prevention of cognitive decline
  • Explain the MIND diet and how it was developed using the Mediterranean and DASH Diets and understand the role of each food group in the diet.
